The SSRI's work by increasing the neurotransmission at all serotonin receptors (many different subtypes) but certain of those serotonin receptors promote neurogenesis.

Activation (or agonism) of the 5-ht1a receptor seems to represent the bulk of the hippocampal trophic effects of the SSRI's.

Some other drugs like TCA's and antipsychotics block the the 5-ht2a receptor. Activation of this receptor seems to cause anxiety.

There are some prototype drugs in the pipeline for anxiety and adjunctive in depression which act as 5-ht1a agonists and 5-ht2a antagonists.

5-ht1a agonists are antdepressants in animal models.
