The only problem is, the next step is much less specific and unique. 5-HTP is converted to serotonin by decarboxylase, and those enzymes are ubiquitous.
The way the healthy body ensures that serotonin is only produced where it is needed is by localizing tryptophan hydroxylase. Oral 5-HTP tends to promote serotonin formation wherever the blood happens to take it.
