In reply to Chinese herbs ?--Schizandra-Larry Hoover, posted by janeB on May 31, 2006, at 20:46:33
Hi, Jane,
I know I'm not Larry, but I wanted to share my own experiences with Schisandra. It was part of an herbal blend called "sheng mai san" (or engender the pulse powder). Still, I did some research into it and it seems to be a pretty beneficial plant, what Richard Brown (of SAM-e and Rhodiola promotion fame) calls an "adaptogen." It seems to be a fairly safe herb to use, but there haven't been any human studies done. Here's a link to more information about it from the Memorial Sloan Ketting Cancer site: http://www.mskcc.org/mskcc/html/11571.cfm?RecordID=509&tab=HC
Oh, and I seem to remember someone posting on the alternative board about taking it because it was prescribed for her asthma and that she'd also gotten an anti-depressant effect.
Good luck with it! And definitely let us know what your results are. For me, it was combined with several other herbs with a specific action, but I did find that the formula improved my breathing considerably, probably because of the Schisanda.
