Scott, I found 5htp helpful. I was on lexapro for several months, switched straight over to zoloft for 3 weeks, and then stopped with a rapid taper of just a few days. 5htp helped a lot. About the only withdrawal effect I remember was feeling a bit dizzy and disoriented for 2 to 3 weeks. Had I not had 5htp it would probably have been rough. Tapering off the 5htp later was mild. I started at 25mg 5htp at night, increased to 25mg 3 times a day, needed about 50mg twice a day for withdrawal suppression, and eventually went up to 50mg 4 times a day to see if it would be a good antidepressant. It wasn't.
