In reply to Flaxseed oil instead of Fish oil??, posted by spriggy on April 29, 2007, at 20:58:07
Hi Spriggy,
I lost a reply I posted to you..so in short, yes one can form longer chain omega 3's from the ALA in flaxseed.. but you can also form it just by "eating your greens" as green leaf plant food is very high in omega 3's too.. in fact that's how fish make it.. from algae (I think!)apparently from studies (mentioned on here before if you search this site)females are better at forming long chain omega 3's than males.. and also some think that the US diet is sooo high in omega6's that the omega 6's swamp the omega 3's and the longer chain ones are therefore not formed in the amount they should be..
so its best to cut out as much omega 6 as possible.. a great start would be to avoid a lot of soy oil! Grains usually conatin more omega 6's.. but have a read of a food table of the oils.walnuts are high in omega 3's too
It been discussed on here ( a lot I think!!) that me and a few of us(all females I think) get acne from fish oil.
I also think I get it from progesterone being highish too.. like in that part of tghe cycle.I seem OK on sardine sthough.. like half of a 100g tin over a couple of days.
And I'm fine on flaxseed too ..at least a little of it.
I'm unsure but I think maybe flaxseed has cyanide too..like almonds.. so its not great to eat too much?
