I have not read that taking 5-HTP should only be short term - you can OD on it though. 500 mg is the going daily dosage. Do watch out for additional ingredients. I was taking one that happened to be full of B-6, which explained why I kept waking up in the middle of the night when I took it before bed.

Make sure you are not allergic to St. John's Wort. It is in a class of plants with echinacea. I am allergic to both so can't take it.
