Aminos

Posted by Lao Tzu on May 20, 2008, at 19:23:15

I wanted to mention that I did experiment with amino acids in the earlier years of my depression before psychosis set in. I found that if I took magnesium glycinate and taurine at bedtime, I felt less anxious the following morning and for part of the day. If I took Mg Glycinate in the morning before work, I would be zoned out for a good part of the day, so I discovered that the time of day you have to take Magnesium glycinate and taurine is right before bed, not during the day. Also, I tinkered with tyrosine and got mixed results. I had to take at least 3,000mg of tyrosine all at once to get a modest improvement in mood and energy, but nothing real spectacular. Still, it was better than nothing, especially if you have low energy depression. Perhaps taking COq10 with tyrosine would be a much better combination with the MgGlycinate and taurine taken at bedtime. As far as the dosages, I could only tolerate one tablet of Mg Glycinate. That seemed to help the anxiety somewhat the next day, but probably not for the entire day. For the taurine, I would suppose at least 1,000mg at bedtime, maybe more depending on what you can tolerate. I didn't like phenylalanine at all. I tried L-glutamine for a while, but I was also on a benzodiazepine, Ativan at the time. The glutamine gave me more energy and the Ativan took care of my anxiety, but glutamine is pretty potent, so I only needed about 500mg or at most 1,000mg. For me, I didn't like the feel of Gaba. I think glycine felt better for me. Glycine helped me somewhat with anxiety, but you MUST ABSOLUTELY be careful not to take too much because it could potentially worsen depression if you take a real high dose. I could tolerate about 2,000mg all at once. I wouldn't recommend any more than 3,000mg at once. Now, potentially you could take glycine during the daytime at 1,000-2,000mg without it causing you to feel zoned out, or perhaps you would benefit more if you took it all at bedtime. I don't know for sure. Everyone has different reactions to things. I just know that it did help with my depression/anxiety. I would just be careful with glycine and err on the side of less is better rather than more. I hope that this information may be worth something to some of you. This is just my experience. It won't necessarily be yours.
