In reply to Natural Alt for Depression after Effexor! Help!, posted by puggycat on April 23, 2009, at 14:32:13
> I hope there is someone than can PLEASE help me with this. I stopped taking Effexor after being on it almost 2 years. I've been off Effexor for almost two months now. With the exception of the side affects, which are now pretty much gone, my mood seemed great. Now within the last week I've started to feel very negative, worthless, can't see the positive in anything, WORRYING about everything from retirement (I'm only 40!) to my children's future mental health. I don't want to get back on the Effexor due to the reasons I stopped taking it to begin with....and I'd prefer not to take an antidepressant for worry off future liver/kidney issues. I am still on Wellbutrin XL (which I was hoping to get off of in the future as well). Please - if anyone has any suggestions for immediate help with something natural I would SO greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
Honestly, Effexor is a tough one. It has effects on multiple receptors compared with common SSRIs. Also, since you're still on Wellbutrin, most supplements that would normally help (5-htp, tryptophan, etc) could prove quite dangerous. There is an over the counter tincture called Rescue Remedy that works within minutes to stabilize the body and since its made from flower essences and a small bit of alcohol only, it is without side effects. I would try that first.
If not, SAMe is my next recommendation. Outside of that, I'd be really careful taking any supplements with Wellbutrin - you don't want to end up in serotonin syndrome!
