There are numerous pain relieving plant based remedies and amino acids. However they work differently and for different causes of pain.

D or DL-Phenylananine may alleviate chronic Pain by blocking the Enkephalinase enzyme that breaks down the Opioids involved in the suppression of Pain. People who have the condition Phenylketonuria must not take this supplement.

COX2 (Cyclooxygenase 2) inhibitors also relieve pain, these are good for relieving muscular pains. Typical herbal COX2 inhibitors are Devil's Claw and Curcumin. Curcumin works well but it's very poorly absorbed, much research would be needed to find a decent bioavailable form. Reviews on iherb are useful I find.

Cat's Claw is another pain reliever which is useful for Rheumatoid and inflammatory conditions, compounds in cat's claw are thought to block the body's production of inflammation-producing substances called prostaglandins and tumour necrosis factor.

Yucca has chemicals called Saponins which relieve pain, more useful for Rheumatoid and Arthritic pain.

The Noni plant has analgesic properties. Source : Younos, C., et al. Analgesic and behavioral effects of morinda citrifolia. Planta Medica. 56:430-434, 1990.

In choosing a pain relieving compound you must choose one that is appropriate to the pain related problem you have. i.e. Arthritis, muscular pain, general pain etc.

Never combine any pharmaceutical pain reliever with a herbal pain reliever.
