Schizophrenia/Bipolar supplements

Posted by Lao Tzu on December 3, 2009, at 15:25:36

As an adjunct to medication, the following has helped me a lot. I was diagnosed bipolar/schizophrenic three years ago because of a psychotic episode, but I imagine I was sick for many years. The illness started when I was about 20 or 21 years old in college. I am now 38 years old. My psychotic episode first started 5 years ago. Now I am on medication and the psychosis is gone with some residual symptoms typical of schizophrenia. They are not too bothersome anymore. Thanks to Risperdal. But I have been taking vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids for awhile now and have seen great improvements in my condition. I'll present you with an outline of my regimen. Note, this is a regimen adjunct to medication. It is prudent to at least let your doctor know of your attempts with nutrients. My doctor doesn't have any faith in them. He's all about the medication, gaining employment, starting a social life, and having a supportive family. All of these are important. Anyhow, here is my regimen:

Vitamin B1---100mg morning and at bedtime
Vitamin C---500mg per day
Vitamin E---200IU in morning and 400IU at bedtime
Manganese---10mg per day

Zinc---11, 22, 30, or up to 50mg per day. It really depends on what you can tolerate. I only use Solgar's zinc picolinate 22mg. It's the only one that works well for me.

Vitamin B12---500mcg per day
Vitamin B6---50mg at bedtime
No-Flush Niacin---500mg at bedtime. No-flush is inositol hexaniacinate.
Melatonin---1mg at bedtime
Selenium---200mcg per day
Fish oil---1,500mg per day---Eskimo-3 is the brand I use.
Borage oil---1,300mg per day (300mg GLA) Note: I used to take fish oil and borage oil at the same time, but I have found that they both work better if I take them about 1 hour apart from each other.

This regimen in addition to my medicine keeps me sane. It helps with depression and mood in my case. I hope this is helpful to some of you.
