Selenium and depression

Posted by Lao Tzu on April 14, 2010, at 10:51:23

Since I have schizophrenia, antioxidant vitamins and minerals have been very useful to me. I think selenium is a great mineral to try if you have a mental illness with a lot of oxidative stress like schizophrenia. Dosage is very important, however. For example, I've learned that the best dosage for daytime use is about 50mcg. 100mcg is too much for me for daytime usage. 50mcg works well for my depression during the daytime. In addition, I take 200mcg at bedtime for additional protection. So if you're thinking about trying selenium, I would try no more than 50mcg for daytime usage and possibly more at bedtime. Many sources say that you can take up to 300mcg per day without side effects. So far, I have no side effects from 250mcg per day. Some sources have said much higher dosages of selenium are needed for cancer, but dosages of more than 400mcg per day are said to produce side effects, so you have to be careful.
