Balancing Calcium/Magnesium

Posted by Lao Tzu on May 16, 2010, at 11:36:46

I have to say that since I've been balancing my magnesium:calcium ratio, I have been sleeping better and have less fatigue during the day, which translates as less depression since I am a low energy depressive. I still have to take other vitamins in addition to the calcium and magnesium, but I believe these two minerals have made a big difference for me. Awhile ago, I started using magnesium oxide, but found that it worked poorly. So I switched to chelated forms of magnesium (citrate) and calcium (amino acid chelate), and I have to say they work a million times better. I threw the magnesium oxide in the trash. It's junk!! Anyway, just wanted to pass this on to anybody suffering from depression who has insomnia and low energy as their symptoms. It could be that your magnesium and calcium is not balanced properly. For me, I find that a 1:1 ratio works best. A lot of sources say to take double the amount of calcium as magnesium, but that doesn't work well for me. Also, I take all of my cal/mag supplements at bedtime because they can be sedating, and I don't want to be sedated during the day. So far, magnesium citrate works very well for me. I had tried magnesium glycinate a long time ago, and I really didn't like the glycine part. It was too sedating for me, but may work for other people. There are many different forms of magnesium out there, some work better than others. Try different forms until you find one that agrees with you. But I would recommend staying away from magnesium oxide. It is poorly absorbed.
