In reply to Turmeric for Anti-Inflammatory NOT MAOI, posted by MuseMemento on April 28, 2015, at 22:15:44
curcumin is the active part of turmeric that has a MAOI effect. Studies on rats were using 20 -40 mg per kilo to elicit a MAOI response. If your 80kg you would need up to 1600 to 3200 mg of curcumin or 1.6 to 3.2 grams of curcumin.
Curcumin is about 2% by weight of Turmeric, so you would need 80 mg to 160 mg of turmeric. or 19 to 38 teaspoons. hmmmm that's a lot.
To be on the safe side I have seen some sites claim that 3% is the claimed percentage. To be extra safe take this figure 12 to 24 teaspoons.
Curcumin is not the only anti-inflammatory component of turmeric. So id stick to just cheap Turmeric.
Just don't add more than 12 teaspoons in your food. That is if you can eat the meal with so much turmeric
As for how much Turmeric to invoke a anti-inflammatory response I don't know, but my gut feeling is it would be less than needed to invoke a MAOI response.
