I've gone through many phases of being obsessed with the idea of "hell" and "eternal suffering," especially during the last decade of my mental health woes. I think it (my obsession) is closely related to my anxiety disorder (the obsession is notably worse during the bleakest times). A fine read that makes the Biblical case that "eternal suffering" is not living for eternity in a place of suffering, but being "extinguished" forever is Edward Fudge's "The Fire that Consumes." His point is not to downplay the idea of being blighted out of existence forever at death, but to show that the Bible makes a scriptural case that this is what happens to those who have not found Christ on "judgement day." I can't say the book comforted me, as most books on the Hebraic and Christian scriptures tend to peak my anxiety more. However, Fudge's case is quite compelling.
