I can't really add much to Klokka's post. It was very sensitive and understanding, and ... well, that's how it is when you're a 'dog person.'
I hope/wish/pray for all the best for your pooches, and it's a gift to THEM to give them to people who have the time/energy/resources/etc. to care for them if you are not in a position to do so. And, sometimes that happens through no fault of your own. I encourage you to believe that you did the right thing. Staying crated for most of the day is not (I bet) what you wanted for them.
It doesn't lessen the pain that much, but it's true.
So very, very sorry!
