i know that cipro is indicated for anthrax, so it's definitely powerful. my mom was prescribed it also when she travelled to turkey, so i think this class of antibiotics and some newer ones are used for things like infections abroad like traveller diarhhea or maybe respiratory infections.
in any case, i would guess that sinus infections and respiratory stuff would be better dealt with with penicillin, erythromycin, clindamycin (for resistant strains) or augmentin (amoxicillin plus something). those are the ones i'm familiar with for things above the belt.
some antibiotics are good for gram positive and some for gram negative. i'm not quite sure what that means, but i know that you may treat a UTI with, say, a tetracycline, but you don't treat strep with it. so i would consult a dr or pharmacist and find out about the cipro before experimenting with it in the hope that it'll help you out.
good luck!
