In reply to Progesterone cream be the problem???, posted by Spriggy on February 24, 2005, at 17:44:23

Just this past week I read that a metabolite of NATURAL progesterone (i.e., NOT progestin or medroxy-progesterone or any other artificial progesterone) lowers the brain's response to corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), which is important in the stress response. The name of the metabolite is allopregnanolone. Apparently, allopregnanolone enhances the activity of GABA. The fact that allopregnanolone lowers the stress response MIGHT lead to treatments for anxiety and depression in women in the future. I wouldn't assume that using progesterone cream or any other kind of progesterone would produce the same result. In fact, synthetic progesterone is known to cause depression.
