Hi all,
We just found out that my 15-year old daughter has PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome. She started her period at the wee age of 10 years old, and has been regular as clockwork since then. All of a sudden, 4 months goes by and NO PERIOD. Stress from an upcoming jaw surgery in April? Growth spurt? Teenage hormones going amuk?
After bloodwork, found out that the problem is her hormones. She has the correct ones in the proper amounts, but there are cysts in both her ovaries that are not allowing the eggs to release. She did finally have a period after 4 months, but it was very scanty. The doctor did say that if she had too much testosterone then she would have many male characteristics, and believe me.....she's got a beautiful female body, well-developed already. How did I ever give birth to such a lovely girl?
I'm looking for any experiences from young girls that have gone through this. The doctor said that she might have few or no periods, have a problem with infertility when she wants to have babies, and has the risk of developing both Diabetes Type II and Osteoporosis. He also said that she would probably gain weight. And that the condition is not curable....just treatable.
And then we came home. He said we could put her on birth control pills now, but he doesn't like to do that with such young girls because it increases the risk of stroke and heart attack. So now I'm just looking for information that can help us understand all of this better. It certainly would explain the depression/anxiety/crying that she has been going through for the past few months (hormones), but again.....I thought it was stress from a major surgery she is having in April. I thought mums were supposed to know best?? LOL.
Thanks for all your help.
God bless,
Sandy
