Well, I hope you will get more informed responses than mine, but since there haven't been any yet, I will say what I have heard of. I read a lot on the message boards (one in particular) regarding weight loss surgeries (I hope to have one), and people at those sites talk about having low iron or ferritin pretty often, and the supplements or infusions they need to get normal blood levels (this is mainly people who have had a kind of weight loss surgery that induces malabsorption of what is eaten, especially the duodenal switch).
Those people often do well with and recommend a product called Proferrin. (I just was having difficulty finding references to it now because I mislabeled it Proferritin, and couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting relevant hits on Google and Yahoo.) Sadly, it's pretty pricey. It is available over the counter (at least in the US) as a dietary supplement. You may be able to get your insurance to cover it if you get a prescription for Proferrin Forte, and get it at a pharmacy. Lots of the people who have low ferritin due to their malabsorptive weight loss surgery get the supplement from vitalady.com.
