I don't have panic disorder, but a 'mood disorder' not classified as anything specific (mostly depression, some anxiety), but just wanted to say that it's all about finding the right doctor. Don't be afraid to ask all the questions you feel you need to of your doctor, take him your research, tell him your fears.
Meds are not all bad, although you will find many folks who have had lots of trouble on them. Unfortunately, there are a lot of meds out there and everyone has a different reaction to them - the same thing doesn't work for everyone. BUT - they CAN work!
Focus right now on finding the right doc - ask around, find someone you feel comfortable with, don't be afraid to see someone different if you don't like the feeling you get with the first one. Then be very frank and honest about your concerns with medication.
Have you thought about psychotherapy? It can be a very effective treatment for GAD. Might be even more effective when combined with medication. Just something more to consider.
