I don't know how much this board is interested in psychoanalysis; I did see some stuff on it, but a lot more on Cognitive therapy. I enjoy it, not only from a therapeutic angle, but from a theoretical and philosophical one. Two books written in the 50's are fascinating explorations of Freud's (and others) work and the implications of psy.analyis on human freedom. One is by Herbert Marcuse, "Eros and Civilization," published first; the second is "Life Against Death" by Norman O. Brown. Marcuse was a philosopher and a very powerful influence on the 60's Left and peace movements. Brown was a Classicist and more of a poet, his book is easier to read and flows better, but both are extremely stimulating. (pun maybe intended). I'm reading the Marcuse now (I've tried to in the past but never got all the way through) and may re-read the Brown. Freud takes a lot of knocks these days--I wonder why. His work is profound though; it might not be the best type of therapy for our modern super-quick society, looking for the instant solution. But there's a lot there. Anyone else gravitate towards this stuff?
