Panda,
From the DSM-IV-TR:
Binge eating is characterized as including both of the following:
1)eating, in a discrete period of time (e.g. within any 2-hour period), an amount of food that is definitely larger than most people would eat during a similar period of time and under similar circumstances. [sounds fairly subjective, but consider usual servings versus the whole package of something as an example]
2)a sense of lack of control over eating during the episode (e.g. a feeling that one cannot stop eating or control what or how much one is eating). There is a new diagnosis of binge eating disorder, which needs more research before it makes it officially in the DSM . This would be someone who binges but does not purge or do any other compensatory things like restrict intake, use laxatives, etc. to make up for the binge. I have a client right now who fits this diagnosis.
There are times what I do would also be considered a binge. Usually under stress or when depression is worse.
Hope this helps,
gg
