MDDP is short for Major Depressive Disorder (Psychotic). It is also known as Major Depression with Psychotic Features, or just plain psychotic depression. My depression and psychoses both pre-date the onset of my drinking, as does certain behaviors which are readily identified as being those of an alcoholic. It is clear to me that both my depression and my alcoholism are closely related and must be treated together. Currently the psychotic depression is treated with anti-depressants, an anti-psychotic and a mood stabilizer. My alcoholism is treated with A.A.
I am seeking literature, studies, etc.. on persons with both diseases together. There is much on psychotic depression, and also much on alcoholism, but hardly anything on persons having both.
As you pointed out, alcoholism leads to psychosis and depression, and is a cause of both. 17 months sober seems a long time to be psychotic still, hence my dual-diagnosis.
Thanks very much for responding, n.
