How big a sound-proof box do you wish to make? That would influence the materials you choose.
A fairly small box can be made by lining it with the foam that's used in "egg crate" mattress pads like these:

All the small air pockets in the foam will absorb sounds & the corrugated "egg crate" design bounce the sound waves about till they're almost completely absorbed by the small air pockets. You need to make sure there's no cracks to let sound 'leak' through.If you need to make a larger sound box, you can use the same idea but make two layers of foam with the corrugated layers facing, one inward & the other outward. You can also layer the inside with actual styrofoam egg cartons (only the corrugated halves) for extra sound bouncing.
