For a concealed weapons permit:
http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+cod+18.2-308
E. The following persons shall be deemed disqualified from obtaining a permit:
18. An individual who has received mental health treatment or substance abuse treatment in a residential setting within five years prior to the date of his application for a concealed handgun permit. The actual concealed weapons permit form:
http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Forms/SP-248_Revised_7-1-2004.pdfNow remember...that is only for a concealed weapons permit. They are much more forgiving with just the plain purchasing permit. You can find a summary of those laws here:
http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/StateLaws.aspx?ST=VAThis is Virginia remember! This state loves their guns!!! In fact, the NRA headquarters is not far from where I live and if you go into their museum you will see thousands upon thousand of guns...and each one can fire if loaded with a bullet! *shock* It's pretty hard *not* to get a gun here. Kind of like the whole cigarette thing in Virginia.
I wouldn't worry too much about it unless you have a really bad mental health history that involves violence and some sort of criminal conviction. That's the only way I can really see you getting denied.
