I wouldn't worry about the expiry date. The worst that could happen is that their efficacy is diminished. But if they've been stored in a cool dry location out of the sun, they should have an indefinite life, according to research done by the U.S. military.

I hope you can clear the air with the doctor. The nurse's comments may not truly reflect your doctor's position.
