You probably live in a damp climate Dinah. The moisture in the air will carry the static charge and dissipate it nicely so it doesn't build up. I think anyway.
Thats why when its -20C here, and everything totally totally freezes, you get alot of static - there's like no moisture in the air because its sooo cold.
