Our family spent dinner last evening happily discussing word origins, pronunciations, and grammar humor. My son enjoyed it up to a point, then fled the table in horror.
But I on the other hand finally figured out how to describe the proper pronunciation of New Orleans. It's New Orl(schwa)ns. I don't have the little upside down "e" on my typewriter.
Very cool, the schwa. Arguably the most used non-letter in the English language. :)
Who else on earth has as his favorite book
"The Lexicon of Intentionally Ambiguous Recommendations"
I'm so lucky to have him.
(Except now I can't hear the Sears commercial without hearing "Life, well... lived.")
