I may have been very lucky with my choice. I did try one of the conversation meetings at a local 'center' for neighorhood residents in a deprived neighborhood in the city and found that it was useless. Disorganized, inappropriate for many of those who attended who didn't know any English-- while I didn't know any Spanish -- so no communication was possible, no agenda, or structure etc.
It was exhausting to do the SAT tutoring-- a lot of prep work and then using a silly and not very good companion book -- the old SAT tests were infinitely better for teaching critical reading-- or any reading-- plus assigning and reviewing homework, etc. Which is why I may not do it this year.
But at least it was interesting.
