I used to avoid drinking in public, too. I'm not sure if you feel the same, but I am socially akward enough without others watching me "become stupid" (in my mind, anyway).
I also do not drink while "out" very much because the dangers of drinking and driving are very real.
But now that I am more comfortable being who I am, I'll drink with others if I don't have to drive home. I'm less worried about what other people think of me...
Hope that hearing about me helps you in some way...
