Not literally. The way drugs add together is totally individual. Your friend with the positive experience provides evidence that it can work that way. There is a new drug just entering the realm of clinical trials that directly targets the cannabinoid system in our brains. (It's really ironic how these brain functions get named. It's not like Mother Nature put those receptors there for when we discovered cannabis.....but I digress.) And that new drug has antidepressant and pain control properties, in animal studies.
If you're sensible about how much, where, when and with whom (it's still not legal, eh?), and you honestly assess the effect, it's a reasonable option, in my opinion.
I personally never had serious mood problems, until I stopped using it. Is there a connection? <shrug>
