Looking for a US organization that does responsible political work for informed consent on benzodiazepines (BZDs). Not sure I can heal with out doing something polical and constructive.
I want to say upfront that what happened to me seems to be genetic and does not happen to everyone who takes BZDs. Only about ? 20% of us. So it is sticky to get good info as there seem to be political camps for and agains BZDs, and as on many drugs not good resarch on long terms effects. I am not agains them, but would have liked to have had informed consent, which I did not.
I guess I know as much as there is about this for practical purposes. Had a withdrawal reaction in Sept, neither psych or med docs would acknowledge what happened; kept asking for help, have gotten a case manager and new therapist, but also a trip to an AODA place because "they specialize" and my HMO won't pay for anything else. I wasn't impressed with their credentials since they had a printout out of the Heather Ashton stuff from the benzo.org. Not that's she's wrong. But it's like one's choice is either an analog of E Fuller Torry or Peter Bregin and nothing in between.
If I have trouble I can go back to the AODA place but they say it's impossible to distinguish the withdrawal from anxiety. HOw do they know? There's no research on it. I sure feel different when I decrease the dose and then it goes away in 5-7 days.
I'm told I may continue to have withdrawal effects for a year or more (but dear dear don't you anxiously worry your little anxioius self about it).
I really hate my NOT care givers. I'll get over it. I really hate being dependent on stupid, uncaring unethical people. I'll never get over that.
