Checking In

Posted by Rick on March 9, 2000, at 22:23:08

Just thought I would let anyone interested know that I have been doing pretty well lately, which given my circumstances, is a miracle to me. It's the first time in my life that I am overjoyed to feel "mediocre"!

I am still on the steady Paxil, Remeron, and Ativan prn, though I am finding that I gain nothing my trying to wean myself off of the Ativan...it just upsets the "cycle" which seems to be working for me, so I use it 3x a day, at 0.5 mg.

The other thing I have found is, that at least for me, I have had to make major lifestyle changes to accomodate taking these meds. Specifically, if I dont get to bed by 11 and up by 7:30, and eat 3 times a day, I am worthless. If I do manage to keep this schedule, I do pretty well...a little dizzy at times, but much better than the suicidal thoughts and bleak outlook on life...maybe (hopefully) this could be regarded as a success story so far...thanx to all for all posts...I am happy there is a place to learn and interact...it means everything to me.

Geez Rick,

yes, you're definately a success story in my book. Enjoy it!

Your lifestyle changes are probably also contributing to your success. Nothing like a regular sleep/wake cycle and regular meals.

I can't even imagine mediocre, and you're there, and you're enjoying it! Wow!

thank you for coming back and sharing your story.

More power to ya! I love hearing the good feedback, the positive results, the improved quality of life. You wrote that you had tried weaning off the Ativan? It is strange how some meds can cause tolerance and not work the same as when they were first initiated and yet, if you try to wean them, the negative effects are immediately visible. If the Ativan helps keep you stable while not increasing the "need" for higher dosages, then I guess you got yourself and good med-cocktail.

Thank you for sharing yourself with all of us, it is more than generous.

Hi Rick,

It is good to hear things are better for you ... just don't settle for mediocre, okay? Be patient, but don't get complacent. We all deserve better than mediocre.

Noa and I have been talking about this -- when is "better" good enough? How can you tell? Particularly for folks like me (depressed since at least the age of eight), I have no "feeling good" baseline for comparison ... as far as I know, I never have felt "good". I also just found out quite personally that what some like to say -- how sometimes you've got to go through some pain to get to someplace better -- is very much true.

Keep looking up, Rick. It's like what Robert Pirsig said about climbing a mountain -- the goal may be to reach the top, but it's not the top but the sides of the mountain that sustain life. So, while you keep climbing, trying to get to the top, take a look around and realize that there's no hurry, you'll get there in time.

cheers,
bob
