Seroquel for depression/anxiety?

Posted by Alan on April 5, 2000, at 8:09:51

Hi everyone. Have any of you had experience with Seroquel for off-label usage of anxiety/depression.

My very skilled pdoc has run the course with every ssri and other antidepressant in combo with every anti anxiety drug there is. Maoi's and stimulants are out of the picture he says and of the anti psychotics, he has the best experience with Seroquel (Quetiapine).

I've never taken an anti psy. drug before and really in complete trust of my doc but wanted help if I could from you about this.

Thank you.
Alan

Alan- I am bipolar w/OCD...and have had anxiety/panic attacks in past. Seroquel was given to me after I was feeling "paranoid" during a manic/mixed phase that put me in the hospital. I am on all ssri's you can think of...neurontin, depakote, luvox, zoloft, in addtion to klonopin. The seroquel, for me, has curbed "racing thoughts" about friends, family, etc...it somewhat "mellows me out" without stupefying me. I think it has been a lifesaver...my spells of depression are anywhere from momentary to at most, lasting a few days. It helps me "keep on truckin"...Stay with it. Taking it doesn't mean you're "psychotic"...Gesundheit!

Thanks Jeffery,

Do I read you right - that you have gone through all of those other medications and have settled on Seroquel - or are you taking something else with Seroquel to help you become less depressed/anxious. My symptoms do include an OCD style by the way.

What did it feel like to start - any side effects that you remember? I understand what you mean about the anti psychotics......my pdoc had to talk persuasively to get me to think about taking it!

I am a big fan of the antipsychotics to help with AD's for depression/anxiety. I have been helped quite a bit by Zyprexa. I asked my pdoc once about Seroquel and he steered me away from it. It's been awhile but I think he mentioned something about my addictive nature (alcoholic) and that he felt safer with the Zyprexa. The one good thing about AP's is that they do tend to work quickly and you will notice results within the first few days.

IMO, it's worth a try but preferably along with an AD that has given you SOME benefit. If there is an AD that has helped a little but not as much as you had hoped then you may want to ttry to augment that with the Seroquel. I don't know that the AP's work as AD's by themselves.

Good Luck,
Chris

See, this is what I'm not sure of either but my pdoc says that it should be tried alone first since the other attempts at all of the AD's or AD's plus anti anxiety agents all gave antidepressant/ anti anxiety effect but with intolerable side effects.

I dunno.

I suppose that my interest also is in the side effects any of you have felt from Seroquel taken without an AD for depression/anxiety. I take ativan and will probably stay on that anyway but want to be able to decrease the dose and prevent the inevitable depression that results from being anxious (my anxiety is not a result of depression in other words).
Any ideas from y'all?
