Hi all: Thanks for your input on the above thread. Gave me lots to think about. I have another question if you don't mind. What is the best med for rages and cutting episodes. I'm getting more and more of those lately and I'm starting to really get disgusted with my myriad of scars. I find talk doesn't stop the craving for blood so what can I take as a med for this?
Thanks for your consideration

Jupiter,
Have you considered one of the newer antipsychotics. Maybe something like Zyprexa or Risperidal could help with the rage and cutting. They really can calm the way your mind processes disturbing thoughts. I know in my case Zyprexa helped remove obsessive thoughts of suicide and death. I never cut but would go out and take chances with my life that I wouldn't normally do. The meds really evened out my thinking patterns and removed the impulsive destructive thoughts. One of these may be worth a try. It sounds like your mind is running too fast to let the rational side catch up with you. See if your doc will give one a try.
Good Luck,
Chris

Thanks for the info Chris. I don't really have the racing thoughts thing. I mostly do my cutting in response to a need for seeing myself punished for the things I do sometimes, like hurt other peoples feelings. I don't really understand the psychotic episodes stuff, it doesn't seem to apply to me in the definition I've read. But I will consider talking to my doc about the meds you mentioned. Thanks for the response.

What about naltrexone. See Dr. Bob's tips.

I used to cut after rages. For me, it was a way to soothe my mind after the emotional intensity of a rage. Tenormin (a Beta-blocker) and Prozac (an anti-depressant) made my rages manageable enough for me to actually do therapy. Through cognitive-behavioral therapy, I learned to deal with frustration well enough to stop cutting completely. With drugs alone, I don't think I would have done as well.
I still have rages, but the frequency fell from about one a week before treatment to about one a year after treatment. Another change is that I tend to arrest the rage faster now, so the rages never quite reach the level of emotional intensity they used to.
Best of luck...
L.
