Nardil and hair loss, anyone?

Posted by Angela5 on January 23, 2001, at 1:51:00

After being on Nardil for a couple of months, I am noticing some definite hair loss. I can't seem to find any info on this as a side effect, so I'm wondering if anyone else here has experienced this?

Thanks,

Angela

Hi Angela,

I went through a really nasty time (divorce, job stress, etc.), was on Parnate and lithium, and lost a lotta hair - partly because i wasn't eating right. (nothing like looking really ratty after your husband falls in love with someone else :) the other weird thing was that my hair, which had a little wave but was basically straight, grew back wavy/curly, it was really pretty, and stayed that way for several years.

are you under lots of stress? i searched for info on nardil and hair loss, too, and couldn't find anything.

are you taking nutritional supplements? make sure you get plenty of zinc and selenium in addition to the basics. i tend to avoid the supermarket-type supplements like centrum, etc. and go for something like twinlabs or solaray. they really work better and don't upset my stomach.

good luck,

mary

Hi Mary.

Hair loss is a side effect of lithium. The same with Depakote. I am sure that stress can make it worse. Perhaps stress and diet are responsible for all of it. I think that selenium supplementation is often suggested for either scenario.

I am smiling at your description of the persistent change in the texture of your hair. I have seen this described before with lithium.

Hi there, Scott ~

Thanks for the information (as always). I'd been taking lithium for three years before the d-i-v-o-r-c-e w/o hair loss, but it makes a lot of sense to me that it was a contributing factor, because I'd had anorexic episodes when I was younger (always during really stressful times) and hadn't ever lost hair. I was on lithium when my mom died, which was as awful as the breakup, but I was eating fine and didn't lose any hair.

Oh lord, I looked so awful when I my hair was growing back, and the new curliness made it even worse ~ I looked like I had some bad seventies hair style. I also got quite a bit of gray. It was very funny to me, as well, when it ended up being the best free perm I ever had :)

Mary -

Thanks for yur help, and thanks for searching for me, too. :) I, too, had an anorexic episode in the past, although I did have hair loss with it. It grew back much thinner, and has remained that way for 8 years. That's part of why I'm so afraid of this hair loss now - it's too thin to tolerate it. I've been on 100 mg Wellbutrin and 3 mg terazosin for a while now. I started Nardil about two months ago, with gradual increases. I'm currently up to 37.5 mg/day. I noticed the hair loss about two weeks ago, but the past week and past couple of days have been REALLY bad. I take Centrum daily, as well as additional B6 and B12 (have been taking the supplements for quite a while, too). Any ideas?

Thanks,

Angela

Angela,
I took another MAOI -Parnate for 2 years and had some hair loss. I also took L-Carnitine(an amino acid) with it because supposedly you need this with Parnate. Not sure about Nardil.

Hi Angela,

I lost hair when I added Lamictal to Nardil, but that stopped after I discontinued Nardil. So yes, Nardil can do that (I think it's listed as a "rare" side effect).

Hey Angela ~

I've read that the recommended doses for selenium and zinc supplementation for hair loss are double that which are supplied with Centrum.

I laid off Centrum when I found out (years ago, it's probably changed) that it wasn't as good as TwinLabs (I seem to remember that the type of iron Centrum used for supplementation cancelled out or conflicted with the form of vitamin E. I try to be very rational about these things, was raised with to have a great deal of skepticism about scientific/medical claims and taught to be evaluative, but this was quite awhile ago and was more actively involved with nutrition and supplements back then.) In any case, I bet Centrum is okay, overall, but you might want to add some selenium and zinc. They're supposed to help most with hair loss.

Good luck. I know when my hair changed (color as well as hair loss) it wasn't a happy time, and my hair was one of the few things I'd ever gotten compliments on. And if you're depressed there's nothing like adding looking a bit goofy to it - oof.

I have a great, great nutrition book that I can't find right now, but I should be able to get the citation. Let me know if you (or anyone else) is interested ~ it was a huge help to me at one time.

best of luck (or should I say, hair's to us?)

Greetz to Angela:
Now this is interesting!
I suggest you read ROGDOG's posting re. the opposite of your inquiry: http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/20010111/msgs/51762.html

Hair loss or growth has much to do with genetics, so take a look at your family album, and you'll get a pretty good idea of what to expect in the future, with or without Nardil.
Also, as mentioned in previous posts, certain nutritional supplements do help: Vitamin E, Zinc, Selenium, and lottsa, lottsa pasta! :-)

Hirsutely yours,

kazoo

Lamictal by itself gives me one hell of a case of dandruff. I also lose more hair when I brush it. I need to use a zinc-based antidandruff shampoo every day. I never experienced any hair-loss when taking Nardil. However, I may be adding Nardil to Lamictal within the next few months, so I should get some idea if the two drugs together act synergistically. I hope not.

=================================================

Hi Angela,

Virtually all antidepressants, including the newer generation have been reported to cause hair loss (alopecia). Other psychotropics implicated to cause alopecia include lithium, carbamazepine (Tegretol), sodium valproate (Depakote, Depakene), amphetamines, phenothiazines. Other drugs that can induce alopecia include anti-cancer, anticoagulants, antithyroid, and beta-blockers (propranolol, etc.).

Certain physiologic and medical conditions can cause hair loss such as thyroid disorders, nutritonal deficiencies (iron, protein), infections, childbirth, postpartum, genetic propensity, and psychological stress.

The combination of zinc and selenium supplement is usually effective in Depakote-induced hair loss. I am not sure if this works with antidepressant-induced hair loss but may be worth a try. For hair loss due to Depakote, higher daily doses of zinc-selenium combination is recommended such as 100 mg of zinc and 200 mcg of selenium.

Good Luck.

Thanks to everyone for your help and info... Nardil is so far working for me, and without the loss of motivation, etc. that I experienced with the SSRIs, so I really hope I don't have to be bald to be well... ;)

I totally concur with Scott. I had the worst dandruff of my life while on Lamictal and I notice a considerable amount of hair loss as well. Coupled with a persistent sore throat, i recently ended my use of lamictal.

While on Nardil, I did not notice any significant hair loss. Try the vitamin supplements as has been suggested. I've heard others comment on the positive results. Good luck and I know its just one more thing, and not something that can be easily dismissed, that is paining you. The Nardil did work wonders for me, although short lived.

Hi Angela. I've been on nardil for a long time and added lamictal a few months ago. I haven't noticed any hair loss. Some years ago I was experiencing great hair loss, but when I added thyroid (mine is armour--a natural thyroid), almost immediately my hair loss stopped. I had gone to an endocrinologist to be tested for thyroid--said everything was normal, but a few years later I went to a different doctor who had me take my temperature every morning. There is apparently a connection between low body temperature and low thyroid, although some doctors don't believe it. But the lack of any more hair loss was evidence to me. Shellie
