REMERON WEIGHT GAIN - APPETITE STIMULANT OR ...

Posted by sweetmarie on April 13, 2001, at 17:15:59

Re.REMERON

Can anyone tell me whether Remeron weight gain is due to:

a) increased appetite (which I can cope with - I have quite a lot of self-will when it comes to dieting),

or,

b) a metabolic change thing (which I can`t)??

Also, if I`m moving from Nardil, which has gained me loads of weight (3 stone), to Remeron, will I just put the `new` weight gain on top of the existing Nardil weight gain? It`s really a thorn in my side, as I am quite a slim person normally.

Is it possible that weight gain on Remeron is not necessarily going to happen.

Please help,

Anna.

Anna,

I have only been on remeron for a week but I can tell you I am much hungrier than ever before. I am being very careful about not eating in-between meals or eating after dinner or at night. I am worried about my increased appetite so I have also upped my cardiovascular exercise to 6 days a week instead of just 3. I have not gained any weight in this week but I will let you know how it goes.

It's the appetite that does you in on remeron. I refused to believe that I was eating too much, and that is why I gained weight the first time. The second time (now) I wrote down everything I ate, and was careful to exercise. I dropped the weight from the first round, and have kept to a good weight. If you have the willpower to keep you caloric intake low you will do just fine. I got into trouble over the summer because remeron made me crave carbs, and I ate a ton of gummy candy and pretzels. Although these are fat free, the increase in calories made me gain so much weight I hit my highest weight ever. With some effort remeron doesn't have to make you fat.

It's an apitite stimulant for sure. Since I still haven't gotten rid of all the weight I gained on it almost three years ago, I'm guessing there was no change in metabolism resulting from discontinuing it. Just a guess though

Try Remeron Anyway » sweetmarie

I think you should try Remeron anyway, regardless of weight gain. I think you would definitely have a chance of relief with Remeron.

I started Remeron at 60 mg right away and had no side-effects. I had no weight gain or sedation during the day.

Here are the benefits of Remeron:

--It can be used for all types of depression, anxiety, OCD, and insomnia.
--It is convienient because it is taken only once at bedtime.
--It may improve libido and sexual performance (its the only medication that improves mine). Dr. Bob Hsieung's fellow doctors recommend it for sexual dysfunction.
--You can take Remeron with most antidepressants except MAOIs.
--It has none of the anticholinergic effects of SSRIs.
--It has gained recognition as a very useful medication from psychiatrists in only four years of FDA approval.

Sal...can you answer my question as to whether or not it is ok to take remeron with low dose trazodone (50mg) to facilitate sleep? I am having a hard time falling to sleep on 15 or 30mg of remeron and need something to push me over the edge. Ambien works for about 1 night and then all I have left is restoril which makes me feel really bad the next day. Thanks.

I totally agree with you. I think that weight gain is secondary, and if the medication helps with the depression then I will be able to tackle the weight gain issue. I.e. I will hopefully have a lot more motivation/energy than I do at the moment (zero).

Did Remeron help with your depression?

Anyway, thanks a lot Sal. I`d like to take this opportunity to say that I`ve read a lot of your postings, and am very impressed with your support and encouragement of others.

I'm sorry, I don't know anything about trazodone. But I do know that perhaps you could try Oxazepam (a minor benzodiazepine), or maybe an atypical neuroleptic like Seroquel. I also thought of trazodone's relative nefazodone for sleep; nefazodone has few side-effects.

Perhaps you could look up whether Remeron interacts negatively with Trazodone on the very useful Drug Checker at: www.drkoop.com

Thanks for the info. I have checked that web site and others and I don't see any interaction warning but I guess I will wait and talk to my pdoc tomorrow. Thanks again.

I usually only need to take 1/4 of a 50 mg in addition to the remeron. I take the trazodone on nights after taking ritalin because the remeron isn't sedating enough. I've never had any problems with 75 mg of remeron and 50 or less of trazodone.

Hi Anna,

I think it really depends on an individuals chemistry.. I gained weight on Zoloft which I lost on Nardil. Also, I have never gained weight from tricyclics which are notorious for this. gained 10-15 pounds on Prozac.
