Hello, i have for about 4 months suspected that i have attention deficit disorder, i show many symptoms of it and possibly a few of obsessive compulsive disorder, such as lack of concentration, not able to compleate simple tasks, always being late when trying to be ontime, bursting out in anger when things arent exactly a certain way,I only listen to my point of view and am extreamly arguementitive if there are any opposing ideas that contridict mine, procrastinating important things, loosing things that involve mental energy, i am tired of it and have tried taking ginko biloba, occasionally taken ritalin given to me through a friend, have tried adrafinil, I have not seen many resaults in any of these medications, i have even taken antidepressants with this medication such as my evaluation says i should, i have taken prozac, paxil, zoloft, and a antidepressant from france which in higher doses was meant for skitzofrenics amisulpride... they only mildly affect my symtoms and do not make huge impacts on my life as i was told they would. I am failing at everything i do, Yet a am extreamly intellectual I lack the patience to do anything!!!!!But i can focus on listening to an indavidual, when the subject matter is of my interest but as for school work forget it, I am not able to do well in my studies/work yet i can carry conversations that are at times astounding for someone of age 16, i have knowledge about many things that 16 year old boys dont even conceave possible...I CANT MAKE GOALS!!! i need help and i realize it, before i loose control of my life, i want to go to college and get good grades, but the simple things get me stuck, yet i can be a doctor and tell you about all the chemicals in the brain how they work etc... i can tell you about neuclear energy, i can tell you about how higher frequency wavelengths travel shorter distences then lower onces that reflect off the ionosphere and make rotation around the earth, i can tell you about every simgle thing the paper said, or direction how to get places for the next 300 miles, but i cant compleate a Book report for school!!!! please help, tell me what to do please i do not understand what is happening and i need to take control before i am 23 without a high school deploma living off my mom who will then be 60 years old and eating bon bons watching tv waisting my life away. WHAT DO I DO >?????? please respond to this, and please read this to its entirety, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

>OKay..... #1 calm down.... things will get better
#2--- maybe you shouldnt take ritilin from friends... and see a doctor about that, and get a prescription of your own, and stay on it for a while and see what that does. Also, are you seeing a doctor right now??? Because it seems that they should be looking into this and trying to figure things out, such as medicinal combinations, I know i recently just started on a beno and an ssri, (ativan and celexa). Sometimes just one medince doesnt work on its on. It does sound as if you are a bright person, but just cant concentrate, hence ADD. That is why I suggest telling your doctor all this, and see what he says, if you havent already. Lemme know whats going on.... Take care.. Marie

It sounds like you have a good grip on the possibilities of having ADD but not seeked
the right help for diagnosis and treatment.
Do you suffer from depression? I do and have suspected at 30 years old I might be ADD.
At this point I think it is mainly assosciated
with my childhood traumas. I am no professional but know you need to find the right help. To start I would check out this web site and search for others becuase if you are ADD you are entitled to alot more help that you are probably not recieving. Keep on investigating and looking for resources that can help you, such as the web, your school,
and the right professionals.
good luck!

Dear Aham,
I can't promise that I will have read your post in its entirety before writing this. An impairment of processing the written word (sometimes referred to as a lack of concentration) is one of the things I have to deal with as part of bipolar depression.
How long have you been working with the same medical specialist?
I might have missed something in your post, but it sounds like you have not sought one yet. If you have, then you can disregard most of the rest of this post.
Not only are you smart, but you are resolved and seem willing to do what is necessary. I have no suggestions for you at the moment. It is difficult and often dangerous to give advice to someone when it is unclear what they are trying to treat. That is why I feel your best starting point is probably the assessment and treatment by an expert rather than continued self-diagnosis and self-medication.
To me, it seems that a psychobiological depression or bipolar disorder is one reasonable explanation for what you have described. I am not familiar enough with ADD AD/HD to know how well your description is consistent with those disorders. Off hand, though, I don't see it. As far as "obsessive compulsive" is concerned, it is possible that this is actually perfectionism that has been learned from one of your parents rather than reflecting the OCD disorder proper. Are you the first born or an only child? Just curious. No special meaning.
How could I possibly know what's going on with you without spending at least an hour interviewing you?
How could I possibly know what's going on with you without having spent 4 - 7 years studying and practicing medicine, regardless of how many hours I spend interviewing you?
I know I seem rather conventional in my posture regarding the utility of physicians, but it seems to me like a better place to start than having amateur armchair psychiatrists guess at diagnoses and recommend drugs and drug combinations without an adequate understanding their pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, potential for adverse side effects and drug interactions, and their impact on coexisting health problems. How can anyone recognize and assess your progress and the emergence of potentially dangerous adverse events without the expertise and experience to interpret your descriptions - especially without any way to actually see you to provide direct observations and assessments? How can anyone discount or interpret any potential bias on your part when you convey your subjective experiences, perhaps with a tendency to want to be for the reader what you want to be for yourself?
You are smart enough to realize that time is of the essence if you want to find a remedy for whatever ails you before it dismantles your academic and vocational future. My advice to you is that you not waste too much more precious time by delaying the seeking of expert treatment. It might take time just to find a competent specialist. Perhaps you or someone posting on Psycho-Babble can do a better job than almost every doctor you can find. Seriously, though, what are the odds?
If you have not been treated by a psychiatrist/psychopharmacologist, you might have to consider all of your previous drug trials as inconclusive, and might need to revisit each and every one of them. In addition, my initial reaction to some of the content in your description is that their are psychological/emotional things going on as well. Concurrent psychotherapy might be indicated along with pharmacotherapy.
Hopefully, you will be able to leave it to the physicians to know all of the medical stuff while you continue to enjoy the study of the effects upon electromagnetic waves their passage through the interface between different media at varying angles of incidence, including those occurring at the ionosphere.

> > --Aram karapetyanHi ARAM, I hope you are feeling better after reading some of the responses to your post. I am a 20 yr. old female, and I was diagnosed w/ ADHD in March '00. I have been on Adderall ever since, and it has done wonders for my life, emotionally, spiritually, academically, physically, and so on. I am no expert, technically that is, but I do somewhat consider myself an expert on the subject of ADHD. In addition to being a psych major, I am currently doing research under a psychiatrist in my town on the effects of Adderall in adults w/ ADHD, and we are about to begin a phase 3 study of Adderall sr for the FDA. Anyway, from reading your post, you definately fit the ADHD diagnosis. You should see a psychiatrist as soon as possible, and try not to take your friends meds. I know it is tempting, but it is not a good idea to do, for the sake of your mental health. Taking meds at random, especially a stimulant like Ritalin or Adderall, can lead to a depressed state. In reference to your statement about taking AD's in the past, most AD's (SSRI's I know for sure) decrease dopamine, making it more difficult for you to pay attention, etc. I hope this helped, If you have any questions please ask.

Where is the scientific evidence to back up these statements?

Hi Bella007.
As I mentioned in my earlier post, I am not a doctor and I am not as sharp at identifying ADD AD/HD as I would like to be. I have just a few questions.
1. What are the things about Aram's description that you used to conclude that he definitely fits a AD/HD diagnosis?
2. What are the things about Aram's description that you used to exclude a diagnosis of depressive disorder?
Thanks.

field(s)of psychology/psychiatry/pharmacology. If you would like to find out more, try researching.

> - ScottHi Scott, I feel that from his description he likely has ADD or ADHD, due to the fact that his symptoms match the criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, aka the DSM-IV. I did not rule out the idea that he could have comorbid depression, he very well may have depression. In most cases ivolving someone w/ ADHD, their depression usually stems from living w/ an undiagnosed and untreated disorder, in this case, the disorder being ADHD. Again, I am not a Dr. either, and this is only my educated opinion, as are, I hope, all the other posts on this thread.
This is the end of the thread.
