Weaning off of effexor--Good results!!

Posted by Tabby22 on May 10, 2001, at 9:10:07

Hi everyone!
I'm so excited about my "new" discovery, that I had to share it with all of you.

I have been on Effexor(then Effexor XR), for about 4 years. I had been on 150mg dose for about 2-3 of those years, and a few months ago I noticed the bad side effects were outweighing the good I once had. For example, I was tired all day long, no energy, horrible weight gain, and others.

Anyway, without notifying my doctor I decided to experiment, I cut the dose in half. Results???

Amazing!! The tired-all-day-long feeling seemed to get better, and more energy returned. And, best of all, my depression was still kept at bay.

My next doctor visit, I told him what I had done, and he could see the difference in me, and was very supportive of my decision to start my way off of Effexor. Together, we decided to step down again to 37.5 mg a day, and it has been working great.

This gives hope to all of us who have seemingly been on anti-depressants forever, and sometimes get into a rut of side effects!!!

When you started the Effexor, was that after your first or second episode of depression?

Sal, I was on Paxil for about a year previous to taking Effexor--then I got off everything for about 1-2 years(pregnancy-related), and it was after having serious family problems that my depression returned full force. Effexor worked better than Paxil ever did for me. Until, of course, the side-effects....

Your history of depression suggests that you may relapse again, considering that after 2 depressive episodes a person has more than a 70% chance of becoming depressed again: http://www.dr-bob.org/tips/split/Antidepressant-maintenance.html

But......... you might be one of the 30 percent so don't get that in your head...... sometimes that will bring it on itself. :-) Good luck.
