CELEXA EXPERTS PLEASE

Posted by elderweissblue on May 17, 2001, at 20:34:35

Need to know- I will be starting celexa in 2 weeks. I heard contradictory statements about its side effects; some people claim that it makes them feel tired at first and others more anxious. If so, do they ever disappear. I tend to be anxious and agitated on ssri's. How does celexa measure? Iam scared.

Well, it all depends... Do you also have bipolar troubles? If not, you might get by on it ok. I have bipolar troubles and it tends to aggravate hypomania when I am high and worsen my melancholy when I am down(but helps social and OCD-like anxiety). However, you said that other SSRI's made you anxious and agitated. Would it be safe to say that your doc has switched you to Celexa from Prozac or Zoloft (which tend to be more activating for *most* folks)? I have found it is beter for sleep than those two, but I still can get agitated and restless from it. You might be better off with a non-SSRI antidepressant.

Of course the old caveat.. everyone is different, but I can tell you that Wellbutrin and Prozac made me irritable, Effexor made me extremely tired, and Celexa did help my depression without too many side effects except that I gained a lot of weight.. but again, some people lose weight on Celexa. You just have to try it and see.
good luck.

Hi! I have taken 100mg of Celexa daily to combat OCD. I have tried several other drugs before with minimal results and so far Celexa has been the best choice for me. I have a few side effects but they are hardly noticable and are not at all intolerable. The side effects that I have experienced are slight drowsiness, occasional restless legs, and some slight sexual delay (which is not a bad thing most of the time, except when tired!) It is a very good drug and I think it will be a worthwhile try for you. I basically stopped other drugs (like Paxil, Serzone, and Effexor for example) because I would get a little too drowsy on them.....they were fairly effective but the drowsiness was a little too much....The Celexa relaxes my mind (racing thoughts, anxiety, sleep problems) which is great but will still make me a little drowsy on occasion. I sleep great with it so that kinda negates the drowsiness during the day somewhat. As far as weight is concerned, as you can tell I am on a high dosage relative to others due to my high drug resistance (with every kind of drug - who knows why) and over the ten months I pretty much have maintained my weight. I probably weigh about 5 lbs less than last summer when I started. I do, however, eat very healthy food and excercise quite regularly which is good for the weight control obviously. Each person is different as the old saying goes, but I know a few people on it, and my doctor who has many patients on it, and most of them maintain their weight.........well, good luck with the Celexa....it is a great drug and I hope you get the same results I did! Take care!

Hi, I am not an expert by any means, but I have been taking Celexa 20mg for a little over a month.I take it for my anxiety and I take Wellbutrin 150mg to help with motivation. I also take 25mg of Seroquel to help me sleep at night. I have always had trouble sleeping and this helps alot. I feel like a combination of drugs has helped when other drugs have failed. I also have the added benefit of losing 9lbs so far. I feel so much better and hope that you will too.

When I took Prozac (with or without Wellbutrin), I was too wired. Celexa is more relaxing for me. BUT- the Celexa made me hyper just for the first month I took it. So hang in there. Start with 10 mg for at least the first week or 2. I took kava when I felt anxious during that first month and it calmed me down within 30 minutes of taking it. The Celexa still works very well for me. I have been on 20 mg for over a year.
