40 mg of Celexa going on 3 weeks, with a teeny lift in depression but no energy, foggy head, headache and yawning (plus no relief from anxiety). Should I have started to feel better and should the side effects have dissipated by now? Thanks.

Taking Celexa in the morning makes me less sleepy and aspirin, tylenol or Ibprofin take my headache away, but nothing puts a dent in that yawning...sandhi Celexa works very well for me, I take 20mgs daily.

Three weeks is not long enough. In clinical tests, people got more anxiety relief with 20 or 30 mg Celexa than they got with 40 or more. Maybe you should go down to 30 or 20 mg. Ask your doctor first. It significantly reduced my anxiety after about 2 months. It gave me more anxiety in the first few weeks but I took Kava when I was jittery and that helped within 30 minutes.

Hi Janelle,
As Bill said in the previous post, 3 weeks is not long enough for trial of an antidepressant. And, I tend to agree with him that may be 40 mg/day is more than what you need at this time. Could a lower dose alleviate these problems?
And the yawning. One hypothesis as to why selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa cause yawning may be related to the effect of serotonin on dopamine. Serotonin have an indirect effect ont he dopamine system, particularly dopamine receptor 2 (D2). Yawning appears to be related to the action of this receptor.
Another hypothesis for the occurrence of yawning is the possible interaction between serotonin and the opiate systems. Yawning is a common clinical symptom of opiate withdrawal.
If the yawning is persistent and intolerable (or embarrassing), you may want to consider trial of cyproheptadine (Periactin), a serotonin antagonist. One potential problem, however, it may diminish the antidepressant action of Celexa. I know. It's always something.
