My psychiatrist claims celexa is the safest of all SSRIs and has the fewest side effects.
My experience with the drug is that it keeps me up all night and gives me severe chest pains and pressure which spreads to my left arm and jaw. These side effects don't go away even after prolonged use.
Is celexa really safer than luvox? I tolerate luvox better even though I have recently "pooped" on it. I can't stand paxil either.
Thanks.

I have heard something similar to what you wrote - I have heard that Celexa is the "cleanest" in terms of it being very narrowly focussed (more than other SSRI's) on Serotonin, and because of this it's supposed to have the least side effects.
I started taking it a few months ago, with high hopes based on these things I'd heard. Well, it proved to be a big disappointment for me. It worked minimally to lift me out of depression and *did* have side effects, which like what you mentioned, did NOT dissipate in time as side effects often do. The side effects I got were bad headaches (which I rarely get), felt very foggy-headed, tired, and just dull, dull, dull.
I have heard of others who've had what you describe in terms of chest pains and muscle pressure.
On the flip side, I know of people who do great on Celexa and love the stuff. Just adds to the well-known fact that what works for one person may not for another, and so forth and so on. Our mileage varies!
So, I really don't know if Celexa could be considered "safer" than Luvox (which is one of two SSRI's I'm considering going on).
BTW, I THRIVED for years on Paxil and may go back on it soon (it's either that or Luvox).
The only thing I have heard about Luvox is that it is sedating. You're the first person I've read from on here who has even had any real experience with Luvox - you said that you I tolerate luvox better - what about sedating effect- do you find that Luvox makes you more drowsy/sleepy?

I wouldn't worry about which drug is cleaner. I think he/she probably meant what Janelle is referring to--the targeting of only seratonin, which of course has its pluses and minuses. I'm not familiar with either drug to tell you which is better for you. I wouldn't stay on an AD if it was giving me chest pains. Have you checked that out; are you sure its celexa is causing this? In any case, I just wanted to wanted to give you an idea that my pdoc has. He thinks that if a AD worked for you and poops out, the first thing to do is to try a stimulent (ritalin, dexadrine, concerta, etc) with the pooped-out AD. He works a lot with depression and he said in the majority of cases, that does the trick. Anyway, just one idea.

Thank you for your response.
I have been on luvox for 5 years. It used to have a sedating effect and I felt drowsy during the day. But as the time passed, it began having the opposite effect and I couldn't sleep. I also developed fibromyalgia and weakness which improved after withdrawal. But now I have to take ADs again...
Perhaps everyone responds differently to these drugs. I find celexa and paxil too stimulating. I imagine that prozac must be worse...

Thanks for the tip.
Do you think it works also for ocd?

I took Luvox for 5 years. It worked pretty good for a while. I augmented it with Adderal So it's hard to say if it really made me drowsy or not since the adderal really pumped me up.. I do think if I had taken it alone it would've made me very out of it. while it helped me quite a bit, I also felt almost emotionless a lot of the time. I switched to Celexa, and it did nothing for me. I went back to cutting myself and became agitated. Different drugs work for different people, but I'd have to say that the Luvox worked the best for my anxiety and OCD out of all the SSRI's. But it did seem to just dull my personality, and it pooped out after a few years. I am currently on Serzone. I find more relief from my depression on Serzone, but less relief with the OCD and occassional anxiety. However , I do like the Serzone better because I can still cry and actaully feel my emotions. It also doesn't ruin my ability to enjoy sex like luvox did.

Yes, I know what you mean. It is frustrating not to be able to feel anything :)
