4am sucks

Posted by KB on November 28, 2001, at 3:38:53

Why is it always 4am when I am depressed and waking up?
Sometimes I think 4am lasts for several times as long as other hours, or occurs more frequently, or something.

I took 4 Benadryl pills and am still awake, resisting the temptation to take more. I haven't had this problem since a couple weeks after I started meds. Luckily, I don't have to work tomorrow.

My grandmother is dying halfway across the country,
I had to have one of my cats put to sleep, my boss realy pissed me off today for blaming me for getting an infection and spending a week in the hospital (she says that since I know I have Lupus I should be more careful, but it was an accident - it's not like I got sick on purpose), my furnace rusted through and flooded the house (the basement ceiling is on the floor, the upstairs floors are warped), etc. etc.

I feel like my brain is going to bubble over and spill out through my ears and run down the sides of my face. Lovely image, huh?

I heard that benadryl causes or worsens depression. Maybe you should try something else to help you sleep. Just a thought.

Hi KB,

That is the *exact* time (well, give or take 30 minutes) that I have my early-morning awakenings when I am very depressed (seasonal winter/summer).
You might try: 1) A stimulant or activating antidepressant in the mornings that will give your brain a "workout" during the day so you will sleep better (intense cardiovascular exercise midday is also helpful)
2) SAD light therapy in the morning.
3) Avoid food or alcohol within 4 hours of going to sleep.

Mitch

Hello, everybody. Thanks for replying. I actually don't use Benadryl often, only when I am really desperate to shut my brain up.

And Mitch, I do take an activating antidepressant (Wellbutrin) in the morning.

Lately I have been letting my cats into the bedroom - I find burying my face in their warm fur and listening to the purring is very relaxing.
