Easing Effexor Withdrawal Nausea?

Posted by girlie on November 6, 2001, at 9:43:52

Does anyone who has gone thru Effexor withdrawal have any ideas for taking the edge off the nausea? This is my 4th day off Effexor XR. The nausea was really bad yesterday and I've got to find a way to function while going thru this!

Oh, and I've seen posts about Benadryl and motion sickness medicine too. Is that for nausea or for brain swooshes?

thanks, girlie

How was is getting off the Prozac tho? How long were you on it and how long did it take you to get off of that?

I'm just afraid to get off one drug by taking another....kinda like paying your credit card balance with another credit card! LOL

It's very important to taper slowly off of Effexor, getting down to almost absurdly small amounts before quitting altogether.

If you've done that, then ask your doctor if it would be OK for you to try Compazine, which is often given for air or sea sickness. It is actually one of the older anti-psychotics, so you wouldn't want to take it continuously for months, but it is frequently prescribed for short-term treatment of nausea, and it is quite effective.

And don't forget good ol' Pepto-Bismol or its generic equivalent.

Best of luck,

Mark H.

Yes, I did wean off of Effexor slowly under the care of a doctor. I left her a message this afternoon to see if she could help me with nausea relief. Still waiting to hear from her.

Thanks for your advice!

Prozac has a very long half life, which means it stays in your body for weeks after you take it,Thus it causes minimal withdrawal symptoms. Effexor on the other hand has a very short half life, a day or so, therefore can cause quite severe withdrawal symptoms. You only need to take prozac for a few days to get relief from your withdrawal symtoms. This is what my doctor told me, but you should check it out with yours !!

Also i am in a slightly different situation because i have decided to take prozac long term.

I quit EffexorXR cold turky four days ago because I could'nt afford to buy anymore and my doctor was out of samples. I have also been questioning Effexors effectiveness for me. I was taking 225mg of effexor and continue to take 900mg of lithium and .5mg Risperdal. At work today I experienced extreme fatigue as well as confusion, irritability and the "electric shocks." The latter of which I find most disturbing because once they start, they don't seem to stop. The jolts include dizzyness, blurred vision and distorted sounds. I was also terrifyingly irritable and upset. I work in customer service and its hard to be pleasant and smile when you feel like ripping your customer's face off. I can't take time off from work, even for a day, because of my desperate financial situation caused by my illness (bipolar disorder) but I also can't work while suffering these withdrawal symptoms. Does anyone have suggestions of how to make it bearable?

I feel for you. A small dose of Prozac is sometimes prescribed (it was for me) to offset the withdrawal symptoms. It's a mistake for most people to stop Effexor cold turkey. My Pdoc made a mistake when instructing me to do so a few years ago. She then used Prozac to take the edge off some of the agonizing symptoms. It did work. Perhaps you can ask your Pdoc for a sample ASAP. There's perhaps a breakdown in communication between you and your Pdoc, IMO. A ramp-down schedule should have been started before you ran out of samples, assuming the doctor knew you were unable to fund a prescription. Give her/him a call and let them know your symptoms ~ they can help!
