Probably a stupid question, but how long does Zoloft retain its
effectiveness after it's past its expiration date?
Is it preferable to skip a day or two or to take an expired drug?

As long as drugs have been stored correctly in a cool dry place, they should still be fine to take after expiration. How long? I would guess a few months but, 'I'm guessing' so you might do more research or wait for more input. I think it would be better to take the pills rather than skip.
I had a pdoc that often gave me slightly outdated samples and said they would be fine.

This is not a "stupid question" at all. For zoloft, you are probably safe, as long as it has been stored in a cool, dry place, as Phil said. However, for some other drugs, like antibiotics, that rule-of-thumb does NOT apply. Antibiotics do deteriorate and may cause severe illness. For example, ingestion of outdated tetracyclines (one of which is Doxycycline) can cause acquired Fanconi's Syndrome.
