Nortriptyline working - surprise!

Posted by BarbaraCat on February 25, 2003, at 13:03:53

I've been on them all, every SSRI, SNRI, lithium, lamictal, topamax etc., Just recently, after my Mom was killed in December I went through a very difficult time, as anyone could imagine. My already very delicate balance was sent over the edge. Although I would never harm myself (bad, bad Karma), I knew it was only a matter of time before I created some disastrous event which would effectively take me out - remove me from such unbearable distress and despair. I've never been on the old-timer TCAs, so my pdoc suggested Nortriptyline, and keeping my current level of lithium. I thought 'oh yeah, right, a tricyclic, like an old dinosaur med is going to work where others have failed!' Well, guess what. It worked. Within 5 weeks a very severe depression has lifted quite miraculously. The only annoying side-effect is cotton mouth but I'll suck on Ricola's and live with it.

I have to go back east in early April to bury her 'cremains', empty out my childhood home and relive memories that I've run from all my life. And you know what? I know I can do it and am even looking forward to it. What a trip this is going to be, definitely NOT your usual same-ol' same-ol' work week - but you gotta be in a stable place to really be there for it, to take it all in. So, I thank the God who makes medicines work. An old workhorse is sometimes better than the newer ones. - Barbara

I'm glad it's working for you. Now let me get on my soapbox.

<soapbox>
There is no evidence that modern drugs, SSRIs, etc. are any more effective at treating depression, than TCAs. There is some evidence that MAOIs are in fact better than SSRIs and TCAs, for some populations. Further, the tolerability of TCAs is only marginally worse, as measured by drop out rates in clinical studies, than SSRIs.

75 mg. Nortrip and 600mg lithium for bipolar II. I've been on so many porkogenic meds over the past 2 years - Remeron, lithium, estrogen, progesterone and not getting much exercise so I can't tell if nortrip makes any diff. I did notice some serious carb and sugar cravings, especially at night, but haven't given in. I'll keep you informed of weight issues. I'm working out alot lately since feeling better and will be bummed if nothing happens.
