Any narcotics OK with MAOIs?

Posted by Ame Sans Vie on March 27, 2003, at 9:52:34

I finally made it into the doctor today after months of severe muscle pain. I'm allergic to acetaminophen, aspirin, and NSAIDs. My GP says fibromyalgia fits my symptoms very well, and it's fairly common in people with depression and anxiety issues. He gave me a prescription for Darvon, 65-130mg q4h prn. I'm thinking I'm either going to be starting Parnate soon or giving Nardil another try though... is propoxyphene safe with MAOIs? I know Demerol and Ultram are definitely out of the question. What about other painkillers?

Your choices for pain relief are limited because of your allergies.Mine too. There are narcotics that can be used with MAOI's. Darvon should not be a problem. (Demerol is the major No-No.)
I Have been taking Ultram for about 4 years, and my pain mgt doc just gave me Percocet as well. I 've been able in the past to take narcotics- though I've had to be much more cautious recently. it gets difficult though when you are in chronic pain, and the only option you have may pose some risk with the maoi.

Thanks for the reply. I spoke with my pdoc this morning, and it looks as if I'm sticking with the Darvon for now. If the pain gets any worse or the Darvon ends up being insufficient, he assured me there are a few options left (morphine, levorphanol, pentazocine). And of course pregabalin when it comes to market. Thanks again!
