The manufacturers of zolpidem (Ambien), zopliclone and zaleplon (Sonata) suggest only a single recommeded dose for these sleeping medications (10mg, 7.5mg and 10mg respectively).
However a friend of mine has difficulty sleeping even after taking the regular dose of one of these meds.
What sort of dose can these meds be safely increased to in order to have a stronger sleeping effect?
The packet inserts say "do not exceed the stated dose" as if there is likely to be a problem but from what I can tell there is no real danger in taking a double dose - except of course that you will sleep for longer and will be drowsier on waking and for longer.
Can anyone advise on this please. Thank you.

Of course a doctor should be consulted before you try raising the dose, but as far as I know Ambien is about as non-toxic as benzodiazepines. My psychiatrist personally had me try 80mg one night (which didn't work) and he says he has one patient with occasional (once every week or two) insomnia that responds to nothing but 100mg+ of Ambien or Sonata.

While I was on Nardil I took 30mg of Ambien on a regular basis with my pdoc's aproval. It definitely was more of a hangover the next morning than with 10mg, but I had no other problems.

My doctor has prescribed 10 - 20 mg Sonata each day to counteract my Prozac insomnia.

>That's encouraging. As a matter of fact I am about to start Nardil. But I was anticipating that it would make me drowsy as I hear that is one of its side effects. Guess it doesn't apply to you?
