Recently, I was prescribed 5 mg of Zyprexa to help with sleep. It is helping and I hate to give it up but unfortunately, I have gained some weight. My doctor wrote me a prescription for Metformin (also known as Glucophage) to stop the weight gain associated with Zyprexa and I was wondering if anyone can share their experiences with this medication and if it was helpful.
Thanks,
Nicole

Thanks for the info. How many mg's did you take? I have also heard that it causes stomach upset and the runs which I am not looking forward to. I still haven't taken it yet since I want to research it more. I need to make a decision soon because I don't want to gain any more weight yet don't want to part with the Zyprexa.

I took it. It caused low grade nausea and a flare up of irritable bowel syndrome diahrrea for the entire time I was on it. No wonder people lose weight. Unfortunately I haven't been monitoring my blood sugar well, and they might just put me straight back on it. :(

Hi!
My doc just put me on Metformin for my "dangerous" weight gain from Nardil (I've gained over 100lbs). Since there are so many tings contraindicated with Nardil-they thought this may help but didn't give me much info on how exactly it works. Can any of you help me out here and explain? Will I lose weight?
Thanks!!!!

Hello all-
So I took my first dose of Metformin and had the most painful cramps in my bowels and hours of terrible runs to the bathroom. Does it get better? I even took Imodium and THAT didn't even do anything. I deparately need a med to help slow my weight loss - and if the Metformin will ALWAYS cause these painful cramps (I felt like I was giving birth) then what else is there for someone on an MAOI??

Hi Jerry,I am on my 2nd week of Metformin and the intestinal problems have subsided. I still have to poop a few times a day and I have some minor cramping but at least I don't have the runs anymore. From everything I have read, the side effects you are having should go away after two weeks. If not, consult your doctor. He may have you back down on your dose and gradually increase. Are you taking the standard 500 mg per day?? Also, make sure to take it with food to lessen the tummy discomfort.

It didn't stay that bad the whole time, but it did cause my IBS to flare up often enough that there were days I couldn't leave the house.
If you can avoid fatty foods, it makes a biiiig difference. If I ate a high fat meal one evening, I could be assured of problems the next day.
This is the end of the thread.
