I've noticed in earlier threads that quite a few people have had adverse reactions to dextroamphetamine vs. Dexedrine and Dextrostat. I've just started on the generic and have been getting massive headaches and sore jaw muscles. Although I haven't been able to catch myself doing it, I must be clenching my jaw all the time. It's even making my teeth hurt. Has anyone else experienced similar side effects? Thanks.

I found barr brand was totally unacceptable--from very first dose. I was hoping it was just me over reacting , but as I continued to use it for a few days I found it caused a totally different effect than either the brand name or the dextrostat-which by the way was just as good highly recommend. Problem was pharmacies all dropped the dextrostat and carried the barr generic. The barr caused a feeling of spaciness, anxiety, headaches as you mentioned and even oddly many times made me drowsy. On the brand name dexedrine or the generic dextrostat I have no side-effects whatsoever. My only remedy was to insist on the brand name. I've heard many complaints concerning this barr so called generic equivalent so you're not alone in what you have perceived. Some pharmacies still do carry the dextrostat generic , perhaps you could shop about and find one. Good Luck !

Thanks for your reply! As an engineer, I've been struggling with brand vs. generic. The engineer in me wants to believe that if the active compound in the generic is the chemical equivalent and isomeric equivalent to the brand pharmaceutical, then it ought to have the same effects. Of course, my insurance company will only pay for the generic, so I've got some financial basis for wanting to believe that the generic dextroamphetamine is just as good as the branded formulation. Guess I'll just have to cough up the money. It's that or quit taking dex altogether. But since it has turned out to be such a godsend, I'm not sure I can go back to the way things were. (I do miss the constant music in my head, though. It was like having my own personal soundtrack for life.)

I'm confused as to what the drugs are. I'm trying Adderall and am trying to figure out what drug company made this one and my last prescription from a year ago. Do you know how long generics have been available for Adderall?
Have you heard of RANBX ? I can't find any mention of Ranbx as a pharmaceutical company. The prescription bottle says Amphetamine Salts by RANBX. They are round and pink.
My last prescription bottle from October 2002 just said Amphetamine Salts and didn't have a name after it. They were blue ovals. I thought they were Adderall, not a generic. They didn't have an AD stamped on them like the pictures I found through Google.
Thanks for any answers. The pharmacist says he doesn't know. (He filled the prescription.) He uses Barr now, but those are peach colored.

I was specifically asking about generic Dextroamphetamine. Adderall is a mixture of dextroamphetamine saccharrate, amphetamine aspartate, amphetamine sulfate and dextroamphetamine sulfate. Generic Adderall or mixed amphetamine salts was first launched by Barr in Feb. 2002, I think. Since then, a few others have joined in. RANBX is Ranbaxy Labs. Eon Labs is another producer. The blue ovals were probably Barr labs 10 mg tabs. Their 5, 7.5, & 10 mgs are blue. Their 12.5, 15, 20 and 30 mgs are peach. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the answer, Johnnyval.
Have you had experience with any differences in the effectiveness of Adderall vs Barr vs Ranbaxy labs?
The Ranbx was so different from the Barr and my tolerance grew so fast. The 10 mg Barr hardly worked at all, but it hardly worked at the same rate from day one to day thirty. If my tolerance to Ranbaxy 20 mg is any indication of things to come, I should max out on prescribable dosages by the New Year.
Has anyone had any experience with both Barr and the name-brand? Or, with any combination of the different companies products?

I haven't taken anything produced by Ranbaxy. The only thing that I can say about Shire vs. Barr is that the Shire stuff felt "cleaner". With all of the stimulants, I experienced a period of very inconsistent effects. One day a dose would seem great and the next it would be hardly noticible. My pdoc just kept increasing the dose until it leveled out. For me that was at 120mgs a day. I started out at five mgs a day and rapidly progressed to 100mgs. Two of the biggest aids in getting a uniform response were diet and schedule. I ate frequent little meals at the same time every day and took the meds at the same time every day. For me, blood sugar swings made it very hard to tell if the med was effective or not, so I avoided fast sugars and tried to maintain a fairly constant glucose level. Oh yeah, water. Same deal. Drank water on a schedule just like meals. Kept my urine clear. Being dehydrated had similar effects to skipping meals.I can't say if my experience is typical, but I have consistently found that if I start eating like crap or skipping meals, things start going downhill. I hope this is of some help.
